Historical background
This office's emergence in Gupta-era inscriptions reflects growing administrative sophistication: once grants like agraharas and brahmadeyas became common, each needed a durable written record — usually a copper-plate charter — to prevent future disputes. The survival of so many such charters is itself the main reason historians can reconstruct Gupta and post-Gupta agrarian history in such detail.
